Nooses found outside Mississippi legislature day before Senate vote

MS is preparing for a US Senate run-off on Tuesday between Republican senator Cindy Hyde-Smith and Democrat Mike Espy in a contest that has increasingly taken on racial overtones.

If victorious, Espy would become Mississippi's first black senator since Reconstruction and the first Mississippi Democrat elected to the Senate since 1982. It begins at 8 p.m. local time or 9 p.m. EST, though he is often late to rallies.

Trump won 58 per cent of the state's vote in 2016, and Hyde-Smith has tied herself closely to his presidency.

Espy kept to a theme he's emphasized repeatedly: He'd be a senator for all of Mississippi. Espy said during a speech Monday night at a predominantly African-American church. He needs white voters, as well. But they say the appearances will provide a spark to their voters, too.

Bryant commented earlier on Hyde-Smith's remarks by saying that the real issue was how abortion was creating a Black genocide. "I think it's been overblown", Smith said over a simmering plate of Chinese food at the Edgewater Mall in Biloxi, .

Trump said the MS senator "felt very badly" about her comments. Asked about it in a recent debate, Hyde-Smith said she would "certainly apologize" to anyone who was offended, but then pivoted to an attack on her opponent. No surprise there. To see her full videos, flip page.

Trump's mission will be to rally the faithful toward Hyde-Smith, who has faced campaign setbacks after her comments this month about a "public hanging" seemed to allude to Mississippi's tortured history of lynching of African Americans.

"So many things are taken out of context", said Elizabeth Gallinghouse, 84, from Diamondhead, Mississippi. But they say the race has tightened - and after what happened in Alabama a year ago, they're on edge. Hold this gun.' It was a fun time. She later sent her own daughter to a similar school, the newspaper reported.

The comment called up dark memories of lynchings in the state. Officials said roughly 800,000 votes were cast. Which, yes, we know that, because that's how fundraisers work. Thad Cochran. The longtime lawmaker retired in April amid health concerns.

Hyde-Smith has campaigned as an unwavering supporter of President Trump, who campaigned with her Monday, praising her at a rally in the northeastern MS city of Tupelo for voting to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

While Mississippi is a solidly Republican state, special elections are notoriously hard to predict as they tend to have low turnout.

MS last elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate in 1982.

"We don't want to have an Alabama", he added, referring to Republican Roy Moore's 2017 loss to Democrat Doug Jones in a special Senate election in the deep-red state.

Two nooses and a number of signs with hateful language were discovered on the grounds of the MS state capitol building on Monday morning, the day before a runoff election is set to commence between a Republican with a questionable past and her black Democratic opponent.

As a state senator, Hyde-Smith "once promoted a measure that praised a Confederate soldier's effort to "defend his homeland" and pushed a revisionist view of the Civil War" as "The War Between the States", according to CNN. She noted that the country's ex-president, Laurent Gbagbo, is being tried in the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity.

President Donald Trump answers questions from the press while departing the White House on November 26, 2018 in Washington, DC. "I resigned the contract".

He says the matter is under investigation, and he did not immediately know what was on the signs.
