Cameroon stripped of 2019 African Cup of Nations in June

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has stripped Cameroon of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations hosting rights, because of concerns about the country's security and infrastructure.

The African football's governing body's Executive Committee held an extraordinary meeting in Accra, Ghana to decide the fate of Cameroon's hosting of the tournament.

CAF will now launch a new bidding process to appoint another host for the African tournament.

Morocco, who lost out to a United States/Mexico/Canada bid to host the 2026 World Cup, have regularly been reported as possible replacements.

The final game of the 2018 AWCON would take place on Saturday, as the Super Falcons of Nigeria and the Bayana Bayana fight to be crowned the female champions of Africa.

Cameroon, who lifted the trophy past year after beating Egypt 2-1 in the final, were initially named as hosts for a 16-team event, only for CAF to confirm an increase in participants in July 2017 during a symposium held in Morocco.

For journalist Pierre Youte "it's perhaps a good decision. like this Cameroon will have the time to learn and find the means to host a CAN worthy of the name".

In August, CAF Chairman Ahmad Ahmad cast doubt over Cameroon's readiness to host Africa's biggest football event.

One of those was to assess the security situation after an escalation in violence in the southwest and northwest of the country involving English-speaking separatists and government forces.

Morocco is the favourite to take over the hosting of the expanded 24-team tournament, which is being held from June 15-July 13.
