Since the beginning of the Aids epidemic in the eighties have been infected worldwide, more than 77 million people living with HIV.

NI Chief Medical Officer Dr Michael McBride said: "The latest PHA report shows that over 1,000 people are living with HIV in Northern Ireland, and 84 new diagnoses of HIV were made here in 2017".

In the East, there are 51.1 new HIV cases in 100,000 people, which is far more than the 6.4 new diagnoses for the same number of people in the West.

"Once diagnosed, individuals are less likely to pass on their infection due to treatment and changing their behaviour, so it is essential for both the person with HIV and anyone with whom they may have sex, that the condition is diagnosed early".

"We live in a context necessarily different from the imaginary of many people, since the treatments are very effective today". Between 2007 and 2016, the number of diagnoses in Eastern Europe had increased by 95 percent; between 2008 and 2017, the increase was only 68 percent.

"The report calls for urgent action for countries and areas (especially in the eastern part) to revamp their political commitment and scale up efforts to implement the Action plan for the health sector response to HIV in the region", the report reads.

"Despite our efforts, HIV still damages the lives of so many people, and causes not only much suffering and illness, but also discrimination and stigmatization", said Vytenis Andriukaitis, European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety.

Men are suffering disproportionately from HIV across the entire Region: 70% of new HIV diagnoses are in men.

"It is hard to speak of good news, if one looks to another year with unacceptable high probability of paying back", says Zsuzsanna Jakap, Director of the WHO Regional Office Europe.

But the statistics suggest new diagnoses in the United Kingdom fell 17% from 5,280 in 2016 to 4,363 past year. An estimated 92% of the of 102,000 people living with HIV in Britain have been diagnosed, according to Public Health England (PHE). Injecting drugs and heterosexual intercourse are the most common reasons for the transmission of the disease in this region.

Is detected the disease early and consistently treated, can be lowered the amount of virus in the body so far that it is in the case of Tests undetectable, and the Affected are not contagious.

The Chamber of the capital will launch on Wednesday the campaign "stop HIV is in our hands", with the aim of "increasing the knowledge of the population" regarding the prevention and transmission of the AIDS virus. World Health Organization says that within the European Union, new diagnoses actually fell.
