The theme of this year's day is "Know your status". Since 2005 we have almost cut in half the number of people dying because of AIDS, and we have dramatically increased the number of people living with HIV on treatment. The aim of the event was to sensitize people from all walks of life on HIV/AIDS and motivate them to come forward and get tested to know about their HIV status while ensuring that all HIV positive cases are put on treatment.

Another survey - of 1,350 people with HIV, conducted by the charity Terrence Higgins Trust (THT) and released to mark the 30th World Aids Day - found 50 per cent of people said they had experienced discrimination due to their HIV status.

In October, three children living with HIV/AIDS were reportedly rejected in a number of schools in Samosir Regency, because the parents of other students were anxious that their children would get infected.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, about 1 in 10 new HIV cases in the U.S.is linked to injection drug use. The majority of the infected were found to belong to the age group of 20-49.

"There is also the discrimination around how sexual partners might view you and do view you and how employees view you". We also have to build strong linkages to guarantee HIV prevention, care and treatment services after testing.

UNAIDS has aimed at the global elimination of HIV by 2030.

The Senate approved a bill on Wednesday to extend the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) for five years and sent it to the White House for Trump's signature.

The charity said that misinformation around HIV still causes stigma, which impacts many people living with HIV.

"As government and other non-state actors are working to create an enabling environment to educate, create employment opportunities and encourage the active participation of the youth in the governance and development process of the country, it is important for us to ensure the youthful population live responsible lives to preserve their health", the statement added. "Understanding that I was unable to transmit HIV sexually has been life-changing too", he said. During the intervening decades, HIV testing services became widely available - routinely through clinical settings and to higher-risk populations through community-based approaches.

Often these harsh attitudes stem from the beliefs that the person with HIV must somehow be living some type of immoral lifestyle.

HIV and AIDS from mother to child transmission has been reduced to less than 2 percent while provision of anti-retroviral treatments reaches to all HIV positive people in need and for free, according to the ministry of health.

In the video, Varadkar demonstrated to viewers how quick and easy to receive a Rapid HIV Test which can develop a result in 60 seconds after getting a few drops of blood from a finger prick.

"People are not focussing much attention on this issue".

She noted that many young people and adult men were being left behind and others still only get tested after becoming ill.
