Germany: No suspicion of foul play after Merkel's plane makes unscheduled landing

Merkel's plane makes emergency stop, tech issues reported

German Chancellor Angela Merkel was finally on her way to Argentina Friday for the Group of 20 summit after a technical problem with her plane forced her to change plans and stay overnight in Bonn.

Shortly after departing from Berlin on Thursday evening, the plane circled over the Netherlands and landed at the Cologne/Bonn airport in western Germany - which is also home base for the German government's aircraft.

The captain told passengers aboard the plane he made a decision to switch aircraft at the Cologne-Bonn airport in northwestern Germany after the 'malfunction of several electronic systems'.

There were few early signs of trouble on board the flight, aside from a frozen video screen that would normally show the plane's path.

The delay forced Merkel to miss the start of the G20 summit and a scheduled meeting with President Donald Trump.

"It was a serious malfunction", Merkel told reporters travelling with her aboard the "Konrad Adenauer", a former Lufthansa airlines jet built in 1999 and named after post-war Germany's first chancellor.

Noteworthy, the aircrew set the transponder to code 7600, that means "radio failure".

Chancellor Angela Merkel will travel to Morocco for a December 10 conference to approve a UN-backed migration pact. It further added that Merkel was still waiting for a replacement plane to take her to Buenos Aires for the G20 summit.

Government sources said Merkel had planned bilateral meetings in Buenos Aires with the presidents of the United States, China, Russia and India. Back then, the issue involved damage caused by rodents, German media outlets reported.
