Trump says next meeting with North Korea's Kim likely in early 2019

US President Donald Trump said yesterday he hoped to organise a second summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in early 2019, perhaps as soon as January or February.

Rather than requiring a declaration of nuclear weapons sites as a prerequisite to a second meeting with Trump, Pence told NBC News that the administration will insist on developing a "verifiable plan" to disclose those sites while the two leaders are in the same room.

And days before the meeting between Xi and Trump in Buenos Aires, an adviser to China's foreign ministry said it would be "impossible" for North Korea to completely give up its nuclear weapons, and the US should instead focus on more incremental progress.

When asked Saturday if he would ever host Kim in the United States, the Republican president replied: "At some point, yeah".

The known demilitarized zone border between North and South Korea is considered the most secure in the world and hard to pass.

North Korea was angered by Washington's refusal to ease sanctions and warned it could resume its nuclear programme.

While the United States allowed for the exemption, Washington is unlikely to support the further delivery of benefits to North Korea as far as plans for an inter-Korean rail connection are concerned.

The South Korean presidential office noted this week that the possibility of the summit occurring before the end of the year remains a possibility.

Sarah Sanders added that Trump and Moon agreed that it is important to keep the sanctions in place. It was essential that worldwide sanctions pressure be maintained on North Korea until its complete denuclearisation was achieved, he said. The train is running on a track that leads to Kaesong, a North Korean city near the border with the South, to start a joint survey with Pyongyang on North Korean railway systems.

"As he promised, President Moon should invite Kim to Seoul and convince him" of making headway in the stalled denuclearization talks, former Unification Minster Jeong Se-hyun said during a meeting with liberal politicians on Saturday. But prospects of a fourth Moon-Kim meeting have recently dimmed, with negotiations on denuclearising the North grinding to a halt.

He said also that he has a "good relationship" with Kim Jong-un and that they're "getting along very well".

After Trump and Kim agreed to work towards the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula in the first summit, progress has been largely symbolic owing to the absence of a clear route map for disarmament.
