British politician reveals he has been HIV positive for 10 years in emotional statement to parliament

In global observation of World AIDS Day tomorrow, which is held annually on December 1 to unite people worldwide in the fight against HIV, MTVs logo will wear the universally symbolic red ribbon on its channels and platforms in almost 180 countries.

"These reflect, HIV is rapidly increasing among the general population, the so-called safe population, which is a big threat to our generation", said Dr. Tokugha Yepthomi, senior medical consultant, Christian Institute of Health Sciences & Research (CIHSR), Dimapur.

"In addition, more than three in five (15.3 million) people are accessing life-saving antiretroviral therapy".

The 32-year-old, who is the Member for Brighton Kemptown, wanted his statement to help tackle the stigma around HIV and Aids and inform people that advances in treatment meant he lives a totally unaffected life with the virus. "Many people still only get tested after becoming ill and symptomatic".

Based on the latest data by UNAIDS 36.9 million people globally were living with HIV in 2017.

Humana People to People through the Total Control of the Epidemic (TCE) programme has for years been carrying out community mobilization activities in Africa, India and China impacting on millions of peoples lives through broader community mobilization strategies aimed at achieving HIV prevention, care, support and access to treatment in affected communities.

HIV and AIDS from mother to child transmission has been reduced to less than 2 percent while provision of anti-retroviral treatments reaches to all HIV positive people in need and for free, according to the ministry of health. She further regretted that the number only constitute 40 percent of those who are actually suffering the disease and the rest are still undiagnosed while they might not even know they are having the infection. His dignity and hope will inspire people across the country and around the world - those with HIV, and also those of us who will always stand together with them.

Earlier, DPO, DAPCU, Mecievinuo delivered welcome address, PO, NETSU, Anna Hairang dwelled on the theme "Know your status" and a member of PLHIV also shared her concern of PLHIVs.

If people don't know their HIV status, they can't protect themselves, their families, their partners.

"In all this, we need the political will; we need the investment from governments, partners and private sectors, and most of all we need the communities to promote demand for HIV testing services".

HIV testing provides people with a unique opportunity to discover their HIV status and enables those diagnosed with HIV to rapidly initiate lifesaving treatment.

He also praised the Duke of Sussex, who has done much work with HIV and Aids charities.
