"As a true patriot and a visionary, President Bush will forever be viewed by people with disabilities and their families as a hero through his efforts to enact the Americans with Disabilities Act".

-The younger Bush asked his dad what he thought about making Dick Cheney his vice presidential choice, and his father approved. Sully will reportedly make one last journey with the 41st president, who served from 1989 to 1993.

-The elder Bush confessed to "uncontrollable sobs" that wracked his body when he watched on TV as his son reacted to the Supreme Court decision settling the 2000 election in his favour.

To commemorate the first former president to die since Gerald Ford in 2006, officials have announced a detailed, four-day schedule of celebratory services and tribute, organised with military precision by the Pentagon task force charged with protecting the USA capital.

Sully had only been with the former President since June.

Baker, who served Bush as secretary of state, joined others in paying warm tribute on Sunday television shows. Bush's family has not said who will speak at the service. Many former presidents and public officials are expected to attend the funeral, including President Donald Trump.

Bush spokesman Jim McGrath posted a picture Sunday of the yellow Labrador retriever named Sully with the caption, "Mission complete".

Bush died at 94 on Friday.

In a statement announcing Bush's passing, Trump said he hoped people across the world would spend December 5 remembering Bush.

Bush will be laid to rest following the funeral at the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library at Texas A&M University in College Station.

That was a time that saw the end of the Cold War as well as the United States' routing of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's army in the 1991 Gulf War. He enlisted in the Navy on his 18th birthday.

Bush is shown with his son George W. Bush, who would later become USA president, and wife Barbara Bush in Rye, N.Y., in 1955.

After moving to Texas to work in the oil business, Bush turned his attention to politics in the 1960s. He was elected to the first of two terms in Congress in 1967. He would go on to serve as ambassador to the United Nations and China, head of the Central Intelligence Agency and chairman of the Republican National Committee before being elected to two terms as Ronald Reagan's vice-president.

The photo touched the hearts of many Twitter users. He lost his bid for re-election to then-Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton, who would later become a close friend.

Bush replied: "Good, that's where I want to go".

Bush's condition further declined after Baker's visit Friday.
