Mitch Marsh dropped for first Test against India

Throw in Australia being without Smith and Warner, and it points to India starting as overwhelming favourites. Both teams wil play four-Test matches which will be followed by a 3-match ODI series.

Paine said: "Mitch Marsh probably hasn't been as consistent as he would like and we would like".

"We know the talent Mitch has. As a captain, it will be an opportunity to leave a legacy and be the first Indian team to beat Australia in Australia".

The Aussie batting may be in tatters but they have four world class bowlers in Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and spinner Nathan Lyon.

"As this series wears on and we get to places where the wicket might be a bit flatter and conditions might be a little warmer and our bowlers a bit exhausted then the all-rounder position becomes important".

"They got through the Ashes previous year I thought and bowled a hell of a lot of overs", captain Tim Paine said.

The first Test between India and Australia will begin from Thursday, December 6, 2018.

Australian bowlers ruled the roost in the first session of the first day against India in Adelaide but it was Usman Khawaja who became the talk of the town for his stunning piece of fielding.

Australia could give a debut to in-form opener Marcus Harris, likely to partner Aaron Finch at the top of the order with Usman Khawaja appearing to be sufficiently recovered from knee surgery to come in at number three. Their problems have been well-documented but when two players of this stature get out of your playing unit can this actually bring you closer as a team?

"I don't think any Australian side is vulnerable at home", Kohli said, suggesting the loss of several of its top players will not affect Australia.

"The [Adelaide] wicket over the last few years here has given enough throughout the game [to not need an allrounder]".

"The quicks are going to have to bowl a bit more and we have full faith that Nathan Lyon can do the job in any conditions", Paine said.

"It's unlikely that we will use the three quicks throughout the whole series as much as we will in this game".

Though selectors will be mindful of keeping Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins available all series, they believe their prized quicks can shoulder an extra workload while fresh.
