North Korean soldier defects to South - South's military

It marked the first time in a decade that a train from the South entered North Korea.

Furthermore, he said he would be interested in inviting Kim to the US for talks at "some point" in the future.

Mr Moon's comments came one day after he met the US President at the G20 economic summit in Argentina.

Trump and Kim met in June in a historic summit in Singapore aimed at curbing Pyongyang's nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

The rhetoric between the Trump and Kim has seemingly softened up since the president famously referred to Kim as the "little rocket man" before talks began.

Despite the warming ties, it remains unclear whether Kim will make his first-ever visit to the South this year, as Seoul is hoping.

Those events, combined with a recent North Korean threat to renew overt nuclear development should Washington continue opposing sanctions relief, suggested to many analysts that the countries are having problems seeing eye-to-eye, calling into question when a second summit might take place. The U.S. leader reportedly asked South Korean President Moon Jae-in to let North Korean leader Kim Jong Un know he "likes him".

But differences have emerged between Washington and Seoul on how to proceed with Mr. Kim, as the dovish Mr. Moon has long favoured engagement with the North.

The Koreas and the US-led UN Command recently finished removing firearms and troops from a jointly controlled area at the border village of Panmunjom, and eventually plan to allow tourists to freely move around there.

Moon's office said that Trump also gave the green light for Kim to visit Seoul, saying the two leaders agreed that would "provide additional momentum to their joint efforts to establish peace on the Korean Peninsula".

After sharply raising tensions with nuclear and missile tests past year, Kim abruptly reached out to Moon and Trump with a vague nuclear disarmament pledge.

The Kaesong factory park was shut down under the South's previous conservative government in February 2016 following a North Korean nuclear test and long-range rocket launch.

The incident did not trigger any gunfire, unlike previous year when a North Korean soldier ran across under a hail of bullets from his own side.
