Tue. 8:26 am: OSU coach Meyer retiring after Rose Bowl

But as ESPN reported in 2015, the coach also left "myriad off-field issues", including more than 30 arrests of players during Meyer's six-year tenure.

Meyer didn't feel Tuesday was the day to dissect his legacy but he briefly touched on it. And it was surely becoming more of a problem when the parents of 18-year-old recruits began asking the kind of hard questions that Meyer had no desire to answer.

Urban Meyer accepted the head coaching job at Ohio State on November 28, 2011.

"I've learned so much from you on a daily basis and will forever be in debt to you", Day said to Meyer during the press conference.

How will Day tweak the coaching staff in the short and long term?

He said the move needed to be made before the early signing period opens on December 19.

Bitter rival MI finished second four times to Ohio State during that stretch.

"We have enjoyed an incredible run".

"I'm sure it will", he said. There were a total of 514 prospects rated five-stars in the 15 years Urban Meyer signed classes with Utah, Florida and Ohio State, and he would go on to sign 6.8 percent of all those prospects.

He first retired from Florida in 2009 only to change his mind before the Sugar Bowl and chose to remain with the program on a lighter off-field schedule after a short leave of absence. Meyer's last game with the Buckeyes will be their Rose Bowl showdown with Washington on January 1.

The university will announce his retirement at a 2 p.m. ET news conference.

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer says it was a series of factors that led to his decision to step down. I won't be sitting around staying up all night, at night with nothing to do.

It will be his first time coaching in the Rose Bowl. But to his grave, he will always want to be remembered as being an Ohio State man and a great Ohio State coach.

Urban Meyer is stepping down as Ohio State's football coach after the Rose Bowl, according to multiple reports Tuesday morning. Meyer wasn't going to win in the court of public opinion like he won on the football field, no matter how aggrieved he felt.

Michael Thomas, a receiver who plays for the New Orleans Saints, tweeted that he sheds a tear when thinking about the impact Meyer had on his life and others. In 2014, Meyer helped his team take the title; he became one of only three college coaches to win major championships at two universities.

In 2009, he announced he was resigning from his job at the University of Florida only to clarify the next day he was taking a leave of absence. His 186 wins are the most through 17 seasons in major college football history and his winning percentage (.853) is the highest. He has a cyst in his brain that causes severe headaches.

Offensive Coordinator Ryan Day is expected to take over as the Buckeyes' new full-time head coach.
