Ozil important for Arsenal despite north London derby omission, claims Emery

A clinical Tottenham side exposed Arsenal's defensive frailties on Wednesday night as the Gunners were defeated 2-0 at Emirates Stadium, though in the long run there will be plenty of lessons learnt from the comprehensive loss to their cross-town rivals, who scored from two of their three shots on target.

And Emery has confirmed the reason for Ozil's omission. Arsenal have to eat maybe half his wages and Ozil will still go to a good side.

"It's a tactical decision because I thought that the players that were with us today were the best choices for this match", Emery told reporters when asked about Ozil's absence. The only way this changes is Ozil leaves.

However, Ozil was mysteriously dropped from the squad for tonight's north London derby.

Former Germany worldwide Ozil has found himself on the fringes of Emery's side at times this term, making 11 Premier League appearances in total, with reports emerging on Wednesday that the midfielder turned down a move to Serie A club Inter last season.

Asked how Ozil reacted to the decision, Emery replied: 'I'm thinking every player we have 24, 25 players, when they are playing in one [game], or they are not playing in another, for me the decision is tactical.

When asked whether the playmaker could leave in January he said: "I am thinking of the match, I am not thinking about another situation".

Alexandre Lacazette's effort against the woodwork was all Arsenal could muster in response, but Emery was not dismayed by the Gunners' performance, adding that his side are still finding their own style.

'Every player, they are important.

"We created chances in the first half to score but our efficiency wasn't good for us".

"When they are on the ball they are a very organised team, movement, they like a lot to be in possession, progress with the passes, with quality, are physically very hard and have attacking players with very big performances now".

"The first for them, they scored".
