Trump would accept less money for border wall: White House

Donald Trump warns of 'long stay' amid partial government shutdown over Mexico wall

Previous government closures have put Washington in crisis mode with round-the-clock talks, strategy sessions and public posturing.

Trump's own Republican party still controls both the House and Senate, but in January the House comes under Democratic control.

Acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney signalled that Trump is willing to accept less money than he's been demanding to build the US-Mexico border wall, but Democrats said they would still not agree to a wall.

Mulvaney predicted the shutdown could go into January, when Democrats assume control of the House.

Here's more on how Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has shifted his stance on immigration over the years.

Key parts of the federal government have been impacted by the shutdown, including the Department of Homeland Security, the Justice Department, the Interior Department, the State Department and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

"I don't think the shutdown will pressure president Trump at all", said Vander Griend, of Tennessee.

Republicans were saddled with the blame, but most Americans suffered relatively minor inconveniences like closed parks and delays in processing passport applications.

"This is what Washington looks like when you have a president who refuses to sort of go along to get along", Mulvaney said.

The Senate adjourned without a deal, meaning the shutdown will continue until at least Thursday, after the Christmas holiday. Trump had pledged that Mexico would pay for the wall; Mexico has refused. All told, the administration says, he wants 700 miles of wall at a total cost of $18 billion.

Trump shot back at "Little Bob Corker", his derisive nickname for the senator, on Monday, as well as Brett McGurk, the USA envoy in charge of defeating the Islamic State in the Middle East who announced he's quitting over Trump's abrupt decision to pull US troops out of Syria.

"We are negotiating with the Democrats on desperately needed Border Security (Gangs, Drugs, Human Trafficking & more) but it could be a long stay", Trump said on Twitter on Saturday.

"As long as the president is guided by the House Freedom Caucus, it's hard to see how he can come up with a solution that can pass both the House and Senate and end his Trump Shutdown".

An angry US President Donald Trump complained on Monday that he was "all alone" in the White House as the US government shutdown hit a third day, even plunging the nation's main Christmas tree into darkness.

The president has dug in on his demand for $5 billion for the border wall, a signature campaign promise that he repeatedly said Mexico would fund.

Building a wall to try to prevent migrants from entering the United States illegally was a central plank of Trump's presidential campaign, but Democrats are vehemently opposed and have rejected his funding request. "Now we're between $1.6 billion and 5". Schumer's spokesman said the two sides remained "very far apart". The negotiations have centered on border security funding amounts and how that spending would be restricted.

Any ultimate deal will likely depend on what defines "the wall".

Mr. Trump last week called it "steel slats", and his budget director on Sunday called it fencing rather than a wall - a major concession for a president who has pointedly corrected people who called his barrier a fence.

Earlier this week, he said: "This is our only chance that we'll ever have, in my opinion, because of the world and the way it breaks out, to get great border security".

"In the Democrats' mind, that is not a wall".
