After the impressive Jasprit Bumrah (6-33) exposed Australia's brittle batting to dismiss the hosts for just 151, Kohli resisted the temptation to ask Tim Paine's men to bat again.

India resumed at 5-54 on Saturday, then reached 8-106 when Virat Kohil called his batsmen in for the second time in the match.

Mayank Agarwal was batting on 28 while Rishabh Pant was on six at the other end when the umpires chose to call it a day.

He was on eight when he feebly chipped an Ishant Sharma delivery to Agarwal at short midwicket, who took a hard diving catch.

At stumps, the visitors had a formidable 346 cushion with five wickets left and two days to play as they inch closer to a first ever series win Down Under. Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja, who came back into the side, picked up two crucial wickets as well.

Then, Bumrah dismissed Marcus Harris for 22 runs, reducing Australia to 36 for 2 in 13.3 overs.

In reply to India's 443-7 declared, Australia went to lunch on 89-4 and failed to conquer a Melbourne Cricket Ground pitch offering variable bounce. The left-hander got an inside edge and was caught at short leg by Agarwal while Bumrah trapped Shaun Marsh (19) leg-before wicket with a cleverly disguised slower one that struck the batsman's pad on the full. The script didn't change much in the afternoon session which saw three more wickets tumbling even as the pitch continued to tease batsmen.

Travis Head was unbeaten on 18 after losing Shaun Marsh (18) just at the stroke of lunch.

Morning showers threatened to delay the start of play on day four but the covers came off and Cummins was soon charging in, seeking to back up an astonishing burst on day three in which he claimed 4-0 in eight consecutive deliveries.

With a 292-run first innings advantage, Indian skipper Virat Kohli could have enforced the follow on but instead opted to turn the screws and add to the imposing total.

Usman Khawaja (21) fell to this ploy, caught at short leg, as Australia slipped further to 53 for 3 in the 20th over.

Cummins added one more later, gettin Ravindra Jadeja with a snorter before Josh Hazlewood got the last word against Pant after being hit for a six.
