Earthquake hits Sicily at magnitude 4.8 damages buildings

The Catania city of Sicily, a Mediterranean island, was hit by a magnitude 4.8 natural disaster on early Wednesday, ANSA reported citing local officials.

About 30 people suffered injuries, mostly from falling masonry as they fled from their homes, officials said.

The quake was the strongest in the region after Mount Etna erupted on Monday, spewing ash and forcing the temporary closure of Sicilian airspace.

Ten people have been injured in Italy after an natural disaster triggered by Mount Etna rocked the region.

By the Eruption of mount Etna have opened up on the volcano, a two-kilometre-long gap, from the Lava, said the National Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) on Tuesday.

The quake struck north of Catania, the largest city in the eastern part of the Mediterranean island, but no injuries or damages were reported there. Additionally, 18 other people went to local hospitals suffering from panic attacks or shock, news reports said. In another house, a ceiling collapsed.

An 80-year-old man was pulled from the rubble of a house, the Italian news agency ANSA said.

Heavily monitored by geologists, Etna, the largest of Italy's three active volcanoes, has been particularly active since July.

Volcanic ash had earlier covered nearby villages and Catania airport had to temporarily suspend operations.

Pictures of damaged buildings have been posted on social media. More than 130 earthquakes with one as high as 4.3 magnitude were also recorded following the volcanic activity.
