The president's invitation, which was described by congressional sources as a briefing and not a negotiating session, was sent to the top two Democrats and Republicans in both the Senate and the House of Representatives.

After a White House meeting on Sunday, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said Trump was receptive to Graham's idea of a deal that might provide work permits to Dreamers in exchange for money for physical border barriers.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the specifics of the briefing.

Trump's tweet came amid reports that he has invited congressional leaders to a briefing on the border wall at the White House, according to Politico and CNN.

AFGE filed the suit in the US Court of Federal Claims on behalf of all essential government workers, as well as named plaintiffs Justin Tarovisky and Grayson Sharp, who work for the Bureau of Prisoners.

Pelosi is expected to become speaker of the House when a new Congress convenes later this week.

"We are giving the Republicans the opportunity to take yes for an answer", Pelosi, who is expected to be the House speaker, said in a letter to colleagues released by her office on Tuesday. "Senate Republicans have already supported this legislation, and if they reject it now, they will be fully complicit in chaps and destruction of the President's third shutdown of his term".

The partial government shutdown began December 22 after Trump bowed to conservative demands that he fight to make good on his vow and secure funding for the wall before Republicans lose control of the House on Wednesday.

"Border Security and the Wall "thing" and Shutdown is not where Nancy Pelosi wanted to start her tenure as Speaker!" Trump tweeted on Tuesday.

"Mexico is paying for the Wall through the new USMCA Trade Deal", Trump said in a Twitter message, in reference to the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

President Donald Trump said US homeland security officials will make a plea for a southern border wall in a White House meeting with congressional leaders on Wednesday, adding that he was open to working on a path to legal status for young illegal immigrants known as Dreamers.

President Trump hinted at the talks in a tweet earlier Tuesday.

They are proposing to pass most administrative budgets lasting through September 30, while only financing until February 8 the thornier budget of the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees border security. Democratic lawmakers and some Republicans have refused to meet the demand, and many have noted that the president previously promised that Mexico would pay for the wall.

Whether the Republican-led Senate, under Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, would consider the bills - or if Trump would sign either into law - was unclear.
