While the 29-year-old politician should have been reveling in her achievement of becoming the youngest woman ever to be elected to the House of Representatives this past week, she was forced to instead deal with trending criticism.

Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, however, handled the video with grace and humour, as did her supporters.

To clarify, Ocasio-Cortez's suggested plan is to tax Americans making more than $10 million a year at a rate as high as 70 percent in order to finance the GND.

Her proposal to increase taxes on the wealthy to fund her Green New Deal, which aims to eliminate carbon emissions in the U.S. within 12 years, was highly criticized.

The clip parodies the famous dance scene from the eighties cult classic The Breakfast Club.

Ringwald, who played rich girl Claire Standish in the film about a mismatched motley group of high-schoolers who bond during weekend detention, tweeted late Thursday, replying to a thread juxtaposing the movie's dance sequence with that of Ocasio-Cortez.

"Mami mopped floors, drove school buses, + answered phones", Ocasio-Cortez wrote.

She is also an adept social media user and has 1.74 million followers on Twitter and 1.2 million on Instagram, and regularly engages with them, such as posting a video diary on Instagram documenting her first week in Washington.

"We only ask how we pay for it on issues of housing, healthcare and education", Ocasio-Cortez said. On Sunday, she'll be profiled on 60 Minutes, where she will talk about her green agenda for zero carbon emissions, which may even mean a top tax rate of up to 70%.

She's lately been a fixation for some on the right - which has been struggling when it comes to reaching and commanding support among millennials, particularly those veering toward Democratic socialism.

Ocasio-Cortez graduated from the university in 2011 with degrees in global relations and economics. Franklin Delano Roosevelt made the radical decision to embark on establishing programs like Social Security.

Ocasio-Cortez, a self-described Democratic socialist, was asked about a comment from Sen.

"On the other hand, if you can't take the heat, then get out of the kitchen", she added.
