Only Harry Kane (14 goals) has netted more times than Son (eight) for Spurs in the Premier League this season.

"I have massive, huge respect for Arsene Wenger because when you talk about 22 years in charge of a club like Arsenal and all that happened in that period, you need to be so good - not only a fantastic coach but a great human being to translate the values you have", Pochettino told reporters ahead of Tuesday's EFL Cup semi-final first leg against Chelsea. "What I saw from my point of view, it was so unfair how the people treated him".

"One thing is to reduce the gap with the top four, to be competitive, to create a team capable of fighting with the big sides".

"At the moment we operate in the same way as we operated in five years ago when we arrived". Maybe we can win some titles but it is going to be a tough job to do because in that situation every club in the last five years was improving a lot.

"I understand that people want the team they support to win the game, but they need to show fair play, to just support their team".

They were due to move into their new 62,062-seat stadium at the start of this season but there is still no date for the official opening.

"I am happy. I know it is hard for the club to add the quality to improve us, that is why I don't expect too much".

"The most important thing is I accepted the challenge when Daniel Levy called me to offer me a contract", Pochettino said. "We will see if that is enough to win titles".

"He was clear - him and (owner) Joe Lewis".

But the England midfielder has insisted there will be no repeat of that error as Mauricio Pochettino's team chase silverware on four fronts in 2019.

"We have not done anything yet, we have not achieved anything but we need to keep it going".

"We are in advance, no?"

"But I don't know because I need to ask (Wenger) one day, if I have the possibility, if he is so happy in the way that he finished", he said.

"But we are so ambitious and we have the ambition to win".

He added: "Of course, we should be in the Champions League next season and that is the aim but we have done nothing yet and I know it is a cliche but it has to be game by game".

It would be tough for Tottenham to snare a player from one of Europe's top sides during the mid-season window, but the valuation of the Swiss worldwide, combined with the status of his current club makes him a realistic target should Dembele leave this month.

"The team is so competitive that we are involved for the third season in a row in the Champions League, playing the past year and a half in Wembley away from home".
