Andy Murray has announced his intention to retire from tennis this year.

However during the practice, having overcome hip surgery and ongoing issues related to the injury, Murray was far from his best, appearing unable to chase down drop shots and nowhere near as fast as he once was.

And when asked if the Australian Open could be his final tournament, he said: "Yes I think there's a chance of that for sure because I'm not sure I'm able to play through the pain for another four or five months".

"Wimbledon is where I would like to stop playing but I am not certain I am able to do that", Andy told reporters at a tearful press conference on Friday (January 11) in Melbourne, Australia.

"I'm not sure I'm able to play through the pain for another four of five months".

"I don't want to continue playing that way".

The Scotsman broke through for grand slam glory at the US Open in 2012 before, most famously, ending Great Britain's more than 70-year men's singles drought at Wimbledon the following year.

He hasn't reached a Grand Slam final since winning his second Wimbledon title in 2016, but has nevertheless enjoyed a glittering career since turning professional in 2005, with not only three Grand Slam titles, but two Olympic gold medals and 45 ATP crowns. At 31, top-ranked Djokovic is at Melbourne Park also trying to win a seventh Australian title.

"My plan is kind of middle to end of December in my training block, I spoke to my team and told them I can't keep doing it".

"I have an option to have another operation, which is a little bit more severe than what I've had before in having my hip resurfaced, which will allow me to have a better quality of life and be out of pain". I'm in a better place than I was six months ago but still in a lot of pain. "I tried pretty much everything that I could to get it right - that hasn't worked". That's something I'm seriously considering.

Still, Murray was apologetic to his fans for not producing a better performance, and proposed to give her a better show at his first round match at the Australian Open. "Would be a pretty cool moment to play doubles (with) his bro at Wimby if he can't play singles", added the American, referring to Murray's older brother, doubles specialist Jamie.

"You guys see me running around a tennis court, walking between points, I know it doesn't look good and it doesn't look comfortable", he said. "That's the main reason for doing it".

"The walking, there are certain things on the court I can not really do properly now, but the pain is the driving factor".
