Raptors to sign former Warrior, Cavalier Patrick McCaw

McCaw played just three games in Cleveland after signing a nonguaranteed two-year, $6 million deal with the Cavaliers.

Whatever the real reasoning for the sign-and-release was, the Cavs are now subject to an investigation. Investigators likely feel that the team tried to circumvent his restricted free agency.

The Milwaukee Bucks drafted McCaw with the 38th overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft.

The Raptors are committing much less money than that, securing McCaw to a one-year veteran's league-minimum deal worth $786,000. The pick would, per the CBA, be lost.

The New York Times' Marc Stein reported that the league's review of the situation involving the Cavs is just beginning.

At least four teams are reportedly interested in signing McCaw, while the Cavaliers may also want to bring him back. The only reason that Minnesota was punished is that emails were leaked after an agent dispute.

The Cavs released McCaw before his deal became fully guaranteed. However, unless that was in writing (which would have been very irresponsible), nothing will happen. Well, it certainly seems like they were bending the rules, so perhaps they should be fined.

With the way things have been going for the Cavs, that could be the first pick in the entire draft. It isn't worth the backlash, and this punishment would not fit the crime.

In an interesting sidenote, you could look at this as an Alfonzo McKinnie-for-Patrick McCaw trade, if the former Warrior sticks with the Raptors.
